Dr Peter Avina is a specialist physician in general, obstetric, and perioperative medicine. He is committed to providing expert care for women with medical problems in pregnancy, in order to achieve the best outcomes for mother and baby.
Born in Adelaide, Peter completed his medical degree at the University of Adelaide, and internship and residency at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He then successfully shaped his specialist training to encompass all major public teaching hospitals and maternity hospitals of South Australia. In addition to private practice, Peter is a staff obstetric physician at Flinders Medical Centre, and a specialist general physician at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He also visits Port Augusta to support the local maternity service. He is a published researcher, and contributes to medical education, supervision and examination. As a frequent attendee of conferences and member of multiple professional bodies, he actively ensures his practice continually evolves and matches best standards.
Peter’s core expertise is the management and coordination of care in complex patients with multiple comorbidities, which is further enhanced with his proficiency in the special requirements and unique challenges of pregnancy. With a comprehensive, holistic and patient-centred approach, Peter has a strong focus on preconception counselling and optimisation, high risk pregnancy care, and prevention and management of medical complications during pregnancy. The medical issues Peter manages in pregnancy includes (but is not limited to): hypertension, preeclampsia, diabetes, hyperemesis, cardiac / kidney / autoimmune / thyroid / haematological disorders, migraines, epilepsy, and medication safety in pregnancy.
In all aspects of his work, Peter is committed to providing high quality and empathic care. He values shared decision making, and prioritises helping his patients become well informed and empowered to engage with their health. He is an experienced advocate of collaborating within multidisciplinary environments, working closely together with other healthcare professionals including midwives, obstetricians, surgeons, nurses, general practitioners, allied health and other medical specialists.
Peter consults at East Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and sees patients booked to deliver with Dr Kate Walsh, Dr Ellen Raghoudi, and Dr Ludy du Plessis. On request, he will see all external referrals in a timely manner, and provide prompt correspondence following consultations.
