The first trimester, spanning the initial 12 weeks of pregnancy, is a crucial and transformative period for both you and your growing baby.

During this time, the conception of new life brings palpable excitement about becoming parents. The knowledge that you are nurturing a tiny being with incredible potential can be a source of joy and wonder. Simultaneously, pregnancy hormones can contribute to emotional fluctuations, ranging from elation to moments of anxiety. Experiencing this mix of emotions is entirely normal, and establishing a robust support system, including friends, family, and healthcare professionals, can be immensely beneficial.

You may experience various physical changes, including hormonal shifts that bring about symptoms such as nausea, breast tenderness, and fatigue. These are common signs of a healthy pregnancy, but it's essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns or discomfort you may be experiencing.

To avoid disappointment, it is important to schedule an appointment with East as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed, requiring a referral from your GP. If you are uncertain about conception dates or seek reassurance, a dating scan can be arranged through your GP when you are approximately 6-8 weeks pregnant.

Your first consultation at East will occur when you are around 10 weeks pregnant. At this time, your doctor will review your medical history and provide education on what to anticipate throughout your pregnancy. They will also discuss nutrition to support strong fetal development and, of course, listen to and address any questions or concerns you might have. If not previously arranged through your GP, your doctor may also suggest blood tests to assess crucial factors like blood type, iron levels, immunity to infections, and potential complications.

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is an optional advanced screening offering valuable insights into your baby’s genetic health without posing any risk to the pregnancy. For parents who wish to discover the gender of their baby, this can also be determined through the same testing process as early as 10 weeks pregnant!

At East, we are committed to supporting you through every stage of your pregnancy journey. Our team of experienced healthcare professionals is here to provide personalised care, answer your questions, and ensure that you and your baby receive the attention and support you deserve.

Congratulations on this exciting chapter of your life, and we look forward to being a part of your pregnancy journey!
